The Xunta highlights the boost to the deseasonalisation of tourism and the international promotion that the J80 World Championship in Baiona represents

From this Sunday until Saturday 23 September, this world championship event will be held in the waters of the Rías Baixas, coming to Galicia for the first time

The Director of Tourism of Galicia, Xosé Merelles, participated together with the Secretary General for Sport, José Ramón Lete Lasa, among other authorities, in the presentation that took place this morning of the J80 World Championship that from next Sunday will be held in Baiona under the organisation of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

This is the first time that this world championship event will be held in Galicia, which will host a top level nautical event and one of the most important in the Spanish regatta calendar. "The fact that Galicia hosts this type of top-level sporting event not only allows us to continue to position Galicia as an ideal destination for hosting these sporting competitions, but also contributes to the deseasonalisation and internationalisation of our destination," said the Director of Tourism of Galicia, "an objective in which excellent results are being achieved, as evidenced by the 2 million nights spent for the first time in the first 7 months of the year".

80 sailboats and nearly 400 athletes

A total of 400 sportsmen and women, accompanied by coaches, trainers, sporting equipment and family members, will bring together nearly a thousand people in the Val Miñor for a whole week, from Sunday 17 September until Saturday 23 September.

The 80 sailing boats that will arrive in Baiona from 43 countries from the 5 continents will make possible a sporting spectacle that, at the same time, will have an important economic impact and will promote tourism in the area outside the high season, thus promoting sailing throughout the year thanks to the characteristics of its estuaries and the excellent nautical facilities that Galicia has.
